AI, MCP and UCP: The Next Era of E-commerce

Dinosaurs did not disappear because they were weak. They disappeared because their environment changed faster than they could adapt.

Something similar is happening in e-commerce today. Artificial Intelligence is changing the way customers search for products, compare options and make decisions. At the same time, it is changing the way businesses can manage their online stores, analyse their data and optimise advertising campaigns.

At Hot Web Design, we do not treat AI as a theoretical concept or another marketing trend. We already use it in the day-to-day management of our clients' e-commerce stores and Google accounts, and we have developed our own MCP and UCP servers to connect Artificial Intelligence with real business data and real commerce workflows.

In this article, we explain what MCP does, what UCP does, how they can help a modern e-commerce business and —equally importantly— what you should not expect Artificial Intelligence to do.

What has changed for businesses?

Two major changes are happening at the same time: the way customers discover businesses is changing, and the way businesses work with their data is changing.

  • Customers no longer rely only on traditional search engines. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and other AI assistants for products, services and recommendations. To understand how these systems see and interpret your business, read our guide to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).
  • Data management is gradually moving towards natural language. Instead of opening exports, spreadsheets, reports and multiple browser tabs, you can ask a specific question and receive a structured answer based on your real business data.
  • AI agents are beginning to participate directly in commerce workflows. With standards such as UCP, compatible platforms can discover products, manage carts and support checkout and order workflows through agentic commerce systems.

A business that continues to operate exactly as it did in 2015 will not disappear tomorrow. It will, however, gradually lose time, data, efficiency and eventually customers to competitors that can react faster and make better use of the information they already have.

Managing an e-commerce store with AI: PrestaShop MCP Server

The PrestaShop MCP Server connects your online store with AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and LM Studio through the Model Context Protocol.

In practical terms, instead of the AI knowing only the information you manually copy into a chat, it can receive controlled and structured access to the functions and data that you explicitly allow.

Your back office can therefore begin to answer questions such as:

  • “Which products have fewer than five units in stock?”
  • “Which orders have been pending for more than three days?”
  • “Find products without a meta description and suggest suitable copy.”
  • “Which customers used to buy regularly but have stopped?”
  • “Which products appear most frequently in abandoned carts?”
  • “Which products have lost sales compared with the previous month?”

The real advantage is not simply that you are using AI. It is that the AI can work with your actual business data, rather than an incomplete export created several days ago.

For businesses with stricter privacy requirements, the architecture can also be designed around a local AI model, allowing data processing to remain within the company's own infrastructure rather than requiring commercial data to be sent to an external AI provider.

Google Ads, Analytics and Search Console in one AI environment

For the Google accounts we manage, our team uses our own Google Services MCP Server. It is an internal Hot Web Design tool: it is not sold as a public service, does not provide public registration and is used exclusively for client accounts that we already manage.

We built it for a simple reason: the information required to make a good digital marketing decision rarely exists inside a single report.

Google Ads may indicate that a campaign is generating conversions. GA4 can show what those users actually do after the click. Merchant Center may reveal a feed problem. Search Console may show organic demand for a product that is not being fully exploited. Tag Manager may reveal that the measurement itself is incorrect.

We therefore connect the services required to see the broader picture:

Service What it helps us evaluate
Google Ads Campaigns, keywords, search terms, conversions, CPA, ROAS and areas where budget is being spent without sufficient return.
Google Analytics 4 Actual conversions, e-commerce data and visitor behaviour after the click.
Search Console Organic visibility, queries, landing pages, indexing and issues affecting search presence.
Merchant Center Products, feeds, diagnostics and data used by Shopping and Performance Max campaigns.
Google Business Profile Business locations, reviews and other aspects of a company's Google presence.
Tag Manager & PageSpeed Conversion tracking, tags, events and technical issues that may affect measurement and performance.

The result is that a search term consuming budget without generating sales can be identified faster and, more importantly, evaluated in the correct context. We do not look only at whether it generated a conversion inside Google Ads. We can also examine GA4 behaviour, the landing page, products, tracking configuration and other available signals.

Are you unsure whether your advertising is actually performing?

Clicks and impressions alone cannot answer that question. You need reliable conversion tracking, properly configured Google Analytics data and Google Ads management based on actual sales, leads, acquisition cost and return on ad spend.

Hot Web Design can manage your Google Ads campaigns, review or implement your conversion tracking and correctly integrate Google Analytics 4, so optimisation decisions are based on reliable business data rather than assumptions.

Using AI does not mean allowing uncontrolled automated changes. In our workflow, changes are prepared, reviewed before implementation and logged. Where available, dry runs and API validation are also used before consequential actions are applied.

UCP: preparing your e-commerce store for AI agents

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard for agentic commerce. It establishes a common language between businesses, platforms, AI agents and payment providers so that commerce capabilities can be exposed and consumed in a standardised way.

This matters because the next stage of AI commerce is not simply an assistant recommending which laptop you should buy. Where supported, a platform can discover a merchant's actual products, understand availability, manage a cart and guide the customer through a real commerce workflow.

With the UCP Server for PrestaShop, your store gains a structured commerce interface through which a compatible platform can:

  1. Discover which capabilities the store supports.
  2. Work with the real catalogue, prices, variants and availability.
  3. Create and manage commerce flows such as carts and checkout according to the store's rules.
  4. Use the store's actual tax, discount, shipping and fulfilment logic.
  5. Support order and post-purchase functionality where those capabilities are available.

Most importantly, PrestaShop remains the system of record. UCP does not replace your store, checkout or commercial rules. It adds a standardised way for new platforms to communicate with them.

This can reduce the need to build a completely separate custom integration for every new AI commerce platform that appears in the future.

MCP or UCP? They solve different problems

MCP and UCP are often mentioned together because both relate to AI integrations, but they solve different problems.

MCP helps you work more intelligently with your own tools and data. UCP prepares your commerce system to participate in emerging agentic commerce channels.

MCP UCP
What it is A general protocol for connecting AI assistants and agents with tools and data. A standard designed specifically around commerce and agentic commerce workflows.
Primary use Management, analysis, reporting and task execution. Catalogue, cart, checkout and other commerce operations.
Direction Inward: making the business operate more efficiently. Outward: connecting the commerce system with new platforms.
Example “Which products lost sales this month?” A compatible AI platform discovers a product and creates a commerce workflow.

For a modern e-commerce store, therefore, the question is not necessarily “MCP or UCP?”. In many cases, the answer may be both, because they address different parts of the same transition.

What AI does not do

Artificial Intelligence is not a magic sales button. Anyone promising automatic sales simply because an AI tool has been installed is describing something very different from reality.

  • It does not replace business judgement. AI can analyse more information and prepare recommendations, but important decisions still require human oversight.
  • It does not repair poor-quality data. If prices, product information, tracking or stock data are incorrect, AI will analyse incorrect information.
  • It does not repair a weak commercial proposition. No technology can automatically turn an overpriced, poorly positioned or badly presented product into a successful one.
  • It does not guarantee sales or rankings. MCP, UCP, SEO and GEO create better infrastructure and new opportunities. They do not automatically create demand.
  • UCP does not mean that every AI assistant can already purchase from every UCP-enabled store. The relevant AI platform must support the required capabilities and the merchant implementation must also be configured correctly.

That is why a serious AI infrastructure should be designed around access control, minimum required permissions, validation before consequential changes, audit logs and clear limits on what each system is allowed to do.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need technical knowledge to use MCP?

No. Day-to-day interaction can take place through ordinary natural-language questions. We can handle the installation, connection, permissions and technical configuration for you.

Is my data sent to third parties?

It depends on the architecture and AI model you choose. If a cloud AI provider is used, that provider's applicable policies apply. When the solution is designed around a local AI model, processing can remain within your own infrastructure.

Can AI change my Google Ads campaigns automatically?

Technically, a system with sufficient permissions can make changes. That does not mean it should be given uncontrolled access. In our workflow, changes are prepared, reviewed and logged before they are implemented.

Does this work only with PrestaShop?

Our e-commerce MCP and UCP servers have been developed for PrestaShop. Google Ads management, Google Analytics, Search Console, Merchant Center and other Google services can of course be used for businesses regardless of the platform running their website or online store.

Will UCP automatically generate sales from AI?

No. UCP creates the technical foundation for a store to interact with compatible agentic commerce platforms. Demand, price, product quality, merchant trust, content and the overall customer experience still determine whether somebody chooses to buy.

Do I need to implement all of this immediately?

No. The correct starting point is the area where your business can gain the most value today. For one company, that may be e-commerce management. For another, it may be Google Ads and conversion tracking. For another, it may be preparing for new AI commerce channels.

Where should you start?

You do not need to change everything at once. Start with the problem that is currently costing your business the most time or money:

  1. Are you spending too many hours managing your back office?
See how the PrestaShop MCP Server can connect your online store with AI assistants and allow them to work with real store data.
  2. Are you unsure whether your advertising is generating results or simply consuming budget?
Start with professional Google Ads management and reliable Google Analytics 4 and conversion tracking. We can manage your campaigns, review what is currently being measured and identify where genuine opportunities for improvement exist.
  3. Do you want your online store to be ready for agentic commerce?
Explore our PrestaShop UCP Server and review the quality of your catalogue, product information and commerce data at the same time.

Artificial Intelligence will not replace a well-organised business. It can, however, make a well-organised business significantly faster, more efficient and better informed.
